The Role
For our newly created Team Lead, Engineering position, the ideal candidate will be a “player-coach” leader who can help us accelerate change and move the platform that drives our business forward using new technologies and approaches.
Coming with experience as a senior or lead developer, this person will bring a balance of hands-on development (approximately 40% of the role), architectural experience, and people leadership. You will help identify problems and lead a small, experienced team of mostly full-stack developers through the changes we need to make to our applications and the technology stack supporting continued business growth.
Our projects cover a wide range of functionality, from custom design tools to e-commerce, order management, and production-related systems, providing significant variety and challenge.
This position follows a hybrid work model, with two days per week working from our Toronto office.
Primary Responsibilities
Research, evaluate, and guide the implementation of new technologies and methodologies that solve business and technical challenges
Participate actively in the entire project life cycle, including architectural design, implementation, coding, testing, and deployment
Spend approximately 40% of time contributing hands-on code alongside the team
Conduct code reviews and promote high standards for quality and maintainability
Coach, mentor, and support the professional development of five developers and one QA
Establish short- and medium-term strategic technical visions for the team
Stay current with trends, techniques, technology, and other factors impacting the business
Manage assignment of resources to projects across multiple product lines
Participate in regular reviews of customer support issues requiring development team assistance
Qualifications & Experience
Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
8+ years of professional software development experience with 3+ years of leadership experience coaching and mentoring experienced technical resources
Proven experience with .NET Core, REST APIs, relational databases, and Git
Proven experience with JavaScript Frameworks including React, Next.js, Fabric.js, and Node.js
Experience with cloud-based CI/CD tools and cloud infrastructure, preferably Azure
Strong knowledge of relational databases, particularly SQL Server, including design and development
Expertise in scalable, service-oriented architectures, RESTful APIs, and microservices
Deep understanding of design patterns, architectural styles, and development methodologies
Experience modernizing architectures and building high-traffic systems
Solid grasp of networking concepts and technologies
Proven ability to deliver large-scale, cross-functional projects on time, balancing quality, feasibility, and prioritization trade-offs
Key Competencies
Collaborative leadership in software development that fosters innovation
Proven ability to build strong technical partnerships and relationships
Experience setting clear expectations with team members and internal/external partners
Strong problem-solving skills, including diagnosing and resolving application, deployment, and build issues with minimal guidance
Effective communicator with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Solid understanding of distributed order management business processes
Ability to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions
Skilled at prioritization, multitasking, and maintaining attention to detail
Bonus Experience
Experience with AI applications, particularly for backend logistics or image processing
Experience with system implementation and knowledge of implementation methodologies
