Senior Software Engineer

The Opportunity: 

We are looking for Versatile, curious, and energetic Software Engineers who embrace solving complex challenges on a global scale. As an Sr Software Engineer at Visa, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable backend API services using Java-based technologies. You will contribute to the architecture, development, and optimization of high-performance, secure, and reliable systems that power Visa’s global payments ecosystem. In this role, you will leverage GenAI and AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery, enhance code quality, and drive innovation.   

The Work itself: 

Key Responsibilities:

• Requirements & Solution DesignCollaborate with product owners, architects, and cross-functional teams to gather and clarify requirements for backend services.Translate functional and non-functional requirements into robust system designs, considering scalability, reliability, and security.Participate in architectural discussions and contribute to the evolution of Visa’s backend platforms.
• Backend API DevelopmentDesign, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs and microservices using Java and related frameworks (e.g., Spring Boot).Ensure code is extensible, maintainable, and adheres to Visa’s secure coding standards.Apply best practices in software engineering, including code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD.
• GenAI & AI-Assisted DevelopmentUtilise GenAI and AI-powered tools for code generation, test automation, documentation, and troubleshooting.Stay current with AI-assisted development trends and proactively adopt new tools and practices to improve productivity and quality.Share learnings and best practices with the team to foster a culture of AI-empowered engineering.
• Quality, Testing & SupportDevelop and execute comprehensive test plans, including unit, integration, and performance tests.Participate in on-call rotations, incident response, and root cause analysis to ensure system reliability.Monitor production systems, identify issues, and implement solutions to improve service availability.
• Continuous Improvement & CollaborationContribute to the development of internal tools and frameworks to support engineering excellence.Mentor junior engineers and participate in knowledge-sharing sessions.Engage in Agile ceremonies and collaborate effectively within a global, diverse engineering team.

This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in office will be confirmed by your hiring manager.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
Experience with enterprise-scale web services and payment/banking technologies.
Prior involvement in AI/ML-driven projects or automation initiatives.
Contributions to open-source projects or technology communities.

Required Skills & Experience:
Strong experience in backend development using Java and related frameworks (e.g., Spring, Spring Boot).
Solid understanding of RESTful API design, microservices architecture, and distributed systems.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and version control (e.g., Git).
Familiarity with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
Exposure to GenAI/AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, ChatGPT, AI code review, test generation).
Knowledge of secure coding practices and experience building consumer-facing applications.
Analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on delivering high-quality, scalable solutions.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
