About this role

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

Hardware Engineering is a diverse, innovative, and collaborative group of electrical, mechanical, reliability, software and vehicle engineers. We design, build, and perfect the products which are the eyes and ears of Waymo's autonomous driving technology, and integrate those products into vehicle platforms. We're seeking curious and talented teammates to keep us moving in the right direction.

This role follows a hybrid work schedule and you will report to a Systems Architect

  • Work with OEMs and Functional Systems Engineers to define and implement the network architecture ensuring functional, safety and security goals
  • Align the comprehensive network communication matrix, defining the critical interfaces between the Waymo system and the OEM base vehicle platform.
  • Define and manage requirements for vehicle platform features that are based on security concepts, such as Digital Key and Software Updates
  • Develop Verification and Validation (V&V) plans, execute tests, analyze results, and resolve defects related to platform security across various platforms and prototype phases
  • Oversee the delivery timing of feature sets and software updates to the vehicle prototype fleet, and troubleshoot issues to ensure required capabilities

You have:

  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in a technical role such as systems engineering or network architecture, with a focus on network design, communication protocols, or the integration of complex electrical systems.
  • Deep technical expertise in vehicle communication networks and protocols, including CAN, LIN, and Automotive Ethernet, along with their associated description files (DBC, ARXML).
  • A thorough understanding of vehicle communications and module security technology
    • Knowledge of Autosar SecOC
    • Knowledge of security relevant services in ISO14229-1 UDS
  • The ability to create & negotiate targets and requirements with OEMs and Waymo adjacencies and create and execute effective DVPs as part of the role. A bonus will be somebody who understands the automotive development process and phases (e.g. M1, VB, TT etc.)

We prefer:

  • Working knowledge of automotive cybersecurity principles and regulatory constraints (e.g., UNR 155/156), including experience with SecOC and other cybersecurity mechanisms and processes such as security threat modeling or risk analysis.
  • Experience with automotive diagnostic protocols and tools (e.g., UDS, DoIP, CANalyzer).
  • Code comprehension ability in C++ or Python to facilitate effective collaboration with software development teams.
