About this role in the team:
BVNK is seeking a Head of Regulatory to lead and manage the global regulatory function while remaining deeply embedded in product advisory. This is a leadership role responsible for shaping BVNK’s global regulatory strategy across payments and money transmission, while ensuring regulatory integrity as the business scales internationally.
The role combines strategic regulatory leadership with hands-on product counsel responsibilities. You will act as the senior regulatory authority across the group, owning licensing strategy, regulatory engagement, and risk management globally, while continuing to advise product, engineering, and commercial teams on the design and launch of compliant financial products.
This role is based in New York or nearby locations and works closely with BVNK’s US leadership, as well as the global legal, compliance, and product teams.
Key Areas of Responsibilities:
Global Regulatory Leadership
- Own and lead BVNK’s global regulatory strategy across payments, money transmission, and financial services regulation.
- Manage the global regulatory function, setting standards, frameworks, and governance for regulatory compliance across all jurisdictions in which BVNK operates or plans to expand.
- Advise executive leadership on regulatory risk, licensing strategy, and regulatory driven business decisions at a global level.
- Ensure consistency of regulatory interpretation and execution across regions while remaining pragmatic and commercially focused.
Regulatory and Product Advisory
- Act as a senior trusted adviser to product, engineering, and business teams on payments regulation, money transfer licensing, financial services compliance, and consumer protection laws.
- Provide practical, commercially grounded legal guidance on the structuring, launch, and scaling of financial technology products across multiple jurisdictions.
- Embed regulatory thinking into product development cycles, ensuring compliance is designed in rather than retrofitted.
- Minimise reliance on external counsel by providing expert in house regulatory and product legal support for day to day matters.
Risk Management and Regulatory Governance
- Identify, assess, and manage regulatory risk globally, advising leadership on evolving regulatory landscapes and emerging risks.
- Design and implement scalable regulatory risk management frameworks that support rapid growth without compromising regulatory credibility.
- Partner closely with Compliance, Risk, and Operations to ensure clear ownership and execution of regulatory obligations.
Regulatory Engagement and Horizon Scanning
- Lead global regulatory engagement, representing BVNK in discussions with regulators, licensing authorities, banking partners, and industry bodies.
- Oversee regulatory horizon scanning across key markets, providing forward looking insight on regulatory change and its strategic impact.
- Drive proactive regulatory strategy rather than reactive compliance, positioning BVNK as a credible and trusted market participant.
Commercial and Contractual Support
- Draft, review, and negotiate customer agreements, financial services contracts, and strategic partnerships with a strong understanding of regulatory and licensing obligations.
- Ensure commercial documentation accurately reflects regulatory requirements for payment processing and money transmission activities.
- Support complex commercial deals where regulatory structure is a critical success factor.
Legal Team Collaboration and Build Out
- Work closely with the wider Global BVNK legal team on regulatory structures, product initiatives, strategic partnerships, and BAU activity.
- Contribute to building scalable regulatory and legal processes, tooling, and playbooks to support continued international growth.
- Mentor and support other legal and regulatory team members as the function matures.
What we need from you:
- Candidates must be based in New York or nearby and have strong hands-on experience with US financial regulation, including state money transmitter licensing.
- 10+ years of legal experience in financial services, payments, or fintech, with deep expertise in money transmission, payments law, and financial regulatory compliance.
- Demonstrated experience leading or owning regulatory strategy at a senior level, ideally across multiple jurisdictions.
- Strong understanding of payments infrastructure, money transmitter laws, and regulatory risk management in high growth environments.
- Proven ability to balance regulatory risk with commercial priorities in fast moving businesses.
- Significant in house experience with limited reliance on external counsel for day to day regulatory and product legal matters.
- Excellent contract drafting and negotiation skills in payments and financial services contexts.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence senior leadership and cross functional teams.
- Experience working in or advising scaling fintechs or regulated financial institutions.
- Crypto experience is beneficial but not a core requirement.
