Reporting to the Group Payroll Manager and based in Sydney CBD, the Payroll Officer is part of a supportive and experienced team of 12 payroll professionals across Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, and Christchurch in New Zealand.
The role is responsible for delivering accurate, timely and compliant end-to-end payroll services for allocated business units and colleges across Navitas operations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering end-to-end payroll processing across the full employee lifecycle, including onboarding, changes to employment conditions and terminations.
- Ensuring payroll is processed accurately and on time, in accordance with legislative requirements, industrial instruments, statutory obligations and agreed payroll deadlines.
- Interpreting and applying Enterprise Agreements, Modern Awards and internal policies to ensure compliant payroll processing.
- Independently calculating termination payments for all termination scenarios, including redundancies, with correct tax treatment and reporting.
- Processing payroll adjustments, back pays and corrections as required.
- Reconciling payroll outputs, including leave balances, pay history and payroll reports.
- Supporting Single Touch Payroll (STP) reconciliation and submissions in line with ATO requirements.
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date employee payroll records and documentation.
- Responding to payroll enquiries in a professional, timely and customer-focused manner.
- Liaising with HR, Finance and managers to resolve payroll-related matters.
- Assisting with payroll audits, reconciliations and reporting requirements.
- Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance payroll processes, accuracy, and efficiency.
- Supporting the payroll team during peak periods and team member absences.
- Maintaining strict confidentiality when handling employee and payroll information.
Essential
- Proven end-to-end payroll processing experience of 3+ years in a medium to large organisation.
- Solid understanding of Australian payroll-related legislation, including the Fair Work Act, ATO requirements and state/territory-based long service leave legislation.
- Experience interpreting and applying Enterprise Agreements, Modern Awards, and internal policies in payroll processing.
- Demonstrated ability to independently calculate termination payments, including accurate tax calculations and understanding of statutory reporting requirements.
- Intermediate Excel skills, with the ability to analyse payroll data, perform payroll reconciliations and support payroll reporting.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and compliance.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to liaise professionally with a range of stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently while contributing positively within a team environment.
- Strong commitment to confidentiality and the appropriate handling of sensitive information.
Desirable
- Experience using iChris / Chris21 payroll system.
- Experience supporting New Zealand and/or Singapore payrolls.
- Experience working in a complex or multi-entity payroll environment.
- Payroll-related qualifications or professional payroll association membership.
- This is a full-time Payroll Officer position, based in our Sydney CBD office.
- Navitas offers a hybrid working model, with 3 days per week in the office and 2 days working from home.
