This role offers the opportunity to lead a globally distributed engineering team responsible for powering a large-scale structured data platform used by millions worldwide. As Engineering Manager, you will oversee the development and maintenance of a high-performance query infrastructure, collaborating closely with product, data, and site reliability teams. You’ll balance technical strategy with people leadership, guiding engineers through complex platform initiatives and cross-team projects. The position emphasizes both operational excellence and innovation, with a focus on scalable, sustainable systems. Operating in a remote-first environment, you will shape team culture, drive delivery outcomes, and ensure platform services meet the needs of diverse communities globally.
Accountabilities:
- Lead, mentor, and grow a distributed engineering team focused on large-scale query services and platform infrastructure.
- Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of high-quality software, including system migrations and platform enhancements.
- Develop and implement long-term engineering strategies for platform reliability, performance, and scalability.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, SRE, and data teams to align on priorities, roadmaps, and dependencies.
- Ensure operational excellence, including incident management, monitoring, and lifecycle maintenance.
- Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and psychologically safe team culture, supporting professional development and sustainable work practices.
- Communicate technical plans, risks, and progress clearly to leadership, stakeholders, and external collaborators.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience managing engineering teams building API-driven or platform-level data services.
- Proven track record delivering large-scale, high-throughput systems with strong operational practices (monitoring, incident response, runbooks).
- Experience guiding software systems through full lifecycle management.
- Strong people management skills, including hiring, mentoring, and performance evaluation.
- Ability to influence cross-functional teams in distributed, remote-first environments.
- Technical understanding of data-intensive applications and privacy-sensitive data.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, especially in asynchronous collaboration.
- Experience with knowledge graphs, RDF/SPARQL, or open data initiatives is a plus.
- Comfort with ambiguity, complex problem-solving, and pragmatic, long-term thinking.
