Industry: Information Technology & Services
Seniority level: Mid-Senior level
Min Experience: 3 years
Location: Remote
JobType: full-time
We are seeking a Lead Hydrology & Flood Risk Engineer to own hydrological analysis, hydraulic modelling, and stormwater system design for complex infrastructure and urban development projects. This role is central to translating rainfall, terrain, and flow data into resilient drainage and flood-mitigation solutions that meet engineering, environmental, and regulatory standards.
You will work closely with civil, transportation, GIS, and geospatial teams to deliver data-driven designs, models, and reports that support large-scale infrastructure planning and climate-resilient development.
Key Responsibilities
Hydrology & Watershed Analysis
Lead rainfall–runoff modelling, catchment characterization, and watershed delineation using statistical and physical hydrology methods.
Analyze long-term rainfall, discharge, and flood records to assess hydrological risk and system capacity.
Evaluate infiltration, peak flows, return periods, and climate impacts on drainage systems.
Hydraulic Modelling & Flood Assessment
Develop, calibrate, and validate hydraulic and hydrodynamic models using tools such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, MIKE, or equivalent platforms.
Perform floodplain mapping, backwater analysis, and capacity assessments for natural and engineered systems.
Identify flood-prone zones, bottlenecks, and system vulnerabilities and propose mitigation measures.
Stormwater & Drainage Design
Design efficient stormwater networks including open channels, culverts, cross-drainage structures, detention systems, and outfalls.
Prepare hydraulic calculations, drainage layouts, longitudinal sections, and design documentation ready for construction and approvals.
Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and environmental guidelines.
Geospatial & Data Integration
Integrate LiDAR, DEM, drone, and topographic survey data into hydrological and hydraulic workflows.
Collaborate with GIS and CAD teams to ensure terrain accuracy, model alignment, and data consistency.
Reporting, Reviews & Coordination
Produce detailed hydrology and flood-risk reports, technical notes, and design submissions for clients and authorities.
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to align hydrological inputs with broader infrastructure and urban planning goals.
Support site inspections, field validations, and design reviews as required.
Performance Expectations
High accuracy and reliability of hydrological and hydraulic models.
Engineering-ready drainage designs with minimal rework.
On-time delivery of models, drawings, and reports.
Strong client acceptance and regulatory compliance of deliverables.
Effective collaboration across engineering, GIS, and survey teams.
Required Experience & Qualifications
Experience
3–12 years of experience in hydrology, stormwater modelling, drainage planning, or water resources engineering.
Demonstrated experience delivering drainage and flood-risk solutions for infrastructure or urban projects.
Technical Skills
Strong command of hydrology, hydraulics, and stormwater management principles.
Hands-on expertise with HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, MIKE, or similar tools.
Proficiency in ArcGIS / QGIS for terrain analysis, watershed modelling, and flood mapping.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD / Civil 3D for drainage and infrastructure drawings.
Ability to interpret LiDAR-derived surfaces, DEMs, and survey data.
Education
M.Tech /
M.Sc in Hydrology, Water Resources, Civil Engineering, or Environmental Engineering.
B.Tech in Civil Engineering with strong relevant experience may also be considered.
Formal certifications or training in hydrological/hydraulic modelling tools are a plus.
