The Sr. Director of Engineering for AI and Developer will lead the organization responsible for the vision, strategy, and delivery of 1Password’s AI and developer product portfolio.
What you build and operate powers 1Password’s AI and developer capabilities such as agent identity, machine workload identity, credential brokering, hybrid deployments, SSH experience, and many other critical experiences for developer and AI use cases.
This leader will translate 1Password’s business and product strategy into an actionable roadmap, delivering cutting edge features to enable 1Password customers to safely use AI and build software more securely.
The ideal candidate combines deep technical experience in cloud-scale and IAM infrastructure, opinions about AI security, strong organizational and people leadership, and the ability to work effectively across Product, Engineering, Security, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Success.
This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.
What we're looking for:
Experience: 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in senior engineering leadership roles.
Technical expertise: Deep understanding of modern cloud-native architectures, APIs, distributed systems, and developer platforms. Experience building tools, SDKs, or services used by developers and partners in production environments. Familiarity with AI-enabled systems, including integrating models into products, operating AI workloads, or supporting agentic workflows.
Security acumen: Strong appreciation for security, privacy, and reliability as foundational platform capabilities. Experience working closely with security teams to design and operate systems that handle sensitive data and credentials.
Execution and delivery: Proven ability to lead complex initiatives from strategy through delivery in fast-moving environments. Ability to clearly connect technical decisions to customer outcomes and business impact.
Cross-functional collaboration: Demonstrated success partnering with Product, Engineering, Security, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Success.
Communication: Ability to connect technical strategy to business outcomes and inspire teams around both near- and long-term goals.
People leadership: Track record of building, scaling, and operating diverse, high-performing engineering organizations and career ladders.
What you can expect:
Lead and scale the Developer & AI Engineering organization: Own the vision, strategy, and execution for engineering teams building 1Password’s developer-facing and AI-enabled capabilities. Translate product and business strategy into clear technical roadmaps that balance innovation, security, reliability, and developer experience. Build durable team structures, operating models, and leadership capacity to support rapid growth and evolving AI use cases.
Deliver world-class developer and AI platforms: Drive the technical direction for platforms and services that enable developers to securely integrate 1Password into modern software and AI workflows. Oversee systems supporting agent identity, machine and workload identity, credential brokering, secure automation, hybrid and cloud-native deployments, and developer tooling. Champion API-first, SDK-driven, and extensible architectures that prioritize usability, composability, and long-term scalability.
Lead AI-enabled product delivery responsibly: Partner with Product, Security, and Data/AI leaders to define and ship AI-powered features that are secure, privacy-preserving, and aligned with customer trust. Establish engineering standards and guardrails for building and operating AI systems, including data access, model integration, evaluation, and runtime safety. Guide teams through rapid experimentation while maintaining high bars for reliability, security, and operational excellence.
Operational excellence at scale: Ensure highly available, resilient, and observable systems that support critical developer and AI workloads globally. Own delivery execution, production readiness, and post-launch operations, enabling teams to operate with autonomy and accountability. Make principled tradeoffs between speed, quality, and risk, and continuously improve engineering effectiveness.
Cross-functional leadership and influence: Collaborate deeply with Product Management, Security, Design, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Success to align priorities and accelerate customer value. Act as a senior technical voice for Developer and AI initiatives across the company, helping shape strategy, investment decisions, and external messaging.
Grow and develop senior engineering leaders: Recruit, mentor, and retain high-impact engineering leaders and individual contributors. Foster a culture of ownership, curiosity, inclusivity, and business impact. Coach Directors and Senior Managers to build strong teams, healthy operating rhythms, and clear career paths.
USA-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $272,000 USD and $408,000 USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
Canada-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $254,000 CAD and $381,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password’s generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
