Position summary
The Manager of External Reporting and Technical Accounting will be a key leader in the Finance organization, responsible for ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of the firm's external reporting, compliance reporting, financial statements, and regulatory disclosures. This role will be the primary liaison with external auditors and be a close business partner with the contracts and legal teams. This role requires a strong combination of technical U.S. GAAP expertise, attention to detail in financial statement preparation, and an ability to translate complex financial results into clear external internal management and compliance reporting. This person is an integral member of the company’s accounting and finance team and will report to the Company Controller.
They will work as part of a remote-first team to deliver the highest quality internal support and solutions to employees at scale in a fast-growing company. Nava is ~650 people today, and this role will be integral to enabling us to approximately double over the next several years. This role will help us solidify our position as a mid-market government contracting firm with a portfolio spanning the federal, state, and local level. Critical to this role will be the ability to deliver reporting solutions through a compliant, customer-centric approach that leverages technology and continuously develops this important function. As a proven finance professional and exceptional operator, this person should build trust and confidence in all interactions, elevate their team, serve as a role model for others, radiate their intent, take pride in strong attention to detail and precision, enjoy solving challenging problems creatively alongside internal colleagues and external teammates, setup scalable technology-enabled processes, and understand our industry’s dynamics and how best to operate within them.
We are seeking “T-shaped” candidates – people with vertical depth of expertise in planning, analysis, and financial management who are strong horizontal leaders and communicators across organizational boundaries. In particular, we are looking for a leader who is an exceptional operator, and will deeply understand our goals, business, delivery approach, and mission, before bringing their expertise to the table to help us get there.
What you’ll do
- External and Compliance Reporting
- Oversee and manage the timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial and compliance reports, including federal and state reporting, bank requirements, and other business reporting.
- Develop structured and automated accounting and business processes for external and compliance reporting, including the necessary control and approval framework.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors on financial reporting and technical accounting matters, managing and meeting audit timelines and information requests for quarterly reviews and the annual audit.
Technical Accounting and Policy
- Independently research, analyze, and interpret complex U.S. GAAP accounting standards for existing operations and new business initiatives.
- Prepare well-documented, clear, and comprehensive technical accounting memos to justify the company’s positions on complex topics, such as revenue recognition on new contracts and service offerings, business combinations, stock-based compensation, and lease accounting.
- Lead the development, maintenance, and dissemination of corporate accounting policies and procedures across all finance functions to ensure consistent and compliant accounting treatment.
- Lead the implementation of newly issued accounting standards, including assessing the impact, coordinating the necessary process and system changes, and managing internal communications.
Internal Management Reporting and Analysis
- Work closely with the Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) team to ensure consistency between external financial results and internal management reporting, forecasts, and variance analysis.
- Prepare specialized reporting and presentations for the Executive Leadership Team, Program Management, and organizational leaders, explaining complex financial results and technical accounting impacts.
- Ensure the maintenance and compliance of all internal controls over financial reporting relevant to the external reporting and technical accounting processes.
- Streamline and improve existing reporting and planning processes so all leaders can easily access the financial information they need to perform their compliance functions, leveraging financial systems and business intelligence tools for efficiency and accuracy.
Required skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- CPA license is required.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience, with at least 3 years spent in Big 4 Public Accounting or large government contracting.
- Deep and current technical knowledge of U.S. GAAP.
- Demonstrated experience researching complex technical accounting issues and writing position memos.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the proven ability to articulate complex financial issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong computer skills and an ability to leverage technology in a contract administration context.
