The Role

We are looking for a dynamic and strategic accountant to join Burkland on a full-time contractor basis, who can be available during U.S. business hours. If you have a background in accounting and a passion for helping startups thrive, Burkland is a wonderful fit for you!

Your Typical, Atypical Day

You’ll be working fully remotely! So, whether in pajama pants and a button-down or taking calls at a coffee shop, you design where and how you work each day. You will work with a variety of clients, requiring the ability to shift contexts, communicate effectively, prioritize tasks, and evaluate needs.

Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to build robust accounting processes and systems for our clients. Understanding and embracing the agile and scrappy nature of startups is essential.

About You

• You are naturally curious and a problem solver who likes to learn and is eager to take on new challenges, especially with cutting-edge technology and emerging industries.

• You are a strong communicator. Bonus points if you have customer or client service experience!

• You thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. If you have startup experience, that's a huge plus!

• You take the initiative and are eager to explore new ways of doing things.

• You are an expert collaborator, regularly asking for and giving feedback.

Your Experience & Background

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

• CIMA Qualification preferred.

• At least 3-5 years of experience in accounting, preferably in a startup environment.

• Experience using QuickBooks Online. Bonus points if you have experience using the classes feature of QBO.

• Proficiency in learning and adapting to new systems.

• Experience working remotely and developing strong team relationships based on trust and accountability.

• Clear and professional communication skills, both verbal and written.

• Willingness to follow established policies and procedures accurately.

• High level of confidentiality while working with sensitive client data.

Core Competencies

• Strong finance-based analytical skills and interpersonal communication.

• Expertise in accounting and client management, including:

  • Prepaid revenue, deferred revenue, and revenue recognition.

  • Intangible asset management and mark-to-market valuation.

  • Inventory, purchase orders, and prepaid expenses.

  • Payment processing systems (e.g., Stripe).

  • Creating and managing monthly close lists.

  • Producing tax-ready year-end reports.

  • Accounts payable and receivable processing.

  • Producing financial reports and GL account reconciliations.

• Competency with software, using platforms like G-Suite, QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, Ramp, and Brex Expensify, and Concur.

• Proficiency in video conferencing tools such as Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams to facilitate client meetings.

• Bonus points if you have experience working with Non-profit or mission based businesses
