Role Summary:
The Senior Accountant uses their expertise and knowledge of our clients and accounting systems to oversee specific projects and reports, becomes more involved in the forecasting and budgeting process, and begins overseeing and training other accounting team members and inter-departmental staff as appropriate. This position is also responsible for assisting the CFO reviewing staff work, ensuring accuracy and providing meaningful feedback for staff development. The Senior Accountant is highly visible to clients, their boards and their service teams and delivers high quality and professional levels of customer service on a consistent basis, acting as a resource for junior team members.
This position is based in Minneapolis, MN and operates on a hybrid schedule, with three days in-office and two days remote.
Essential Job Functions
- Cash Maintenance
- Review and problem solve monthly bank reconciliations
- Assist with entry and review of other monthly transactions as needed
- Communicate with CFO and client team regarding cash flow issues and potential courses of action
- Month-End Closing
- Perform month-end close procedures and prepare financial statements as needed
- Enter and post journal entries
- Record appropriate monthly accruals
- Reconcile inter-company accounts and Affiliated Building Company escrow statements
- Perform analysis and provide reasoning for variances
- Other Financial Reporting
- Review grant compliance reports for assigned clients
- Review budget-to-actual variance reports for assigned clients
- Client Interaction
- Be a resource for clients when questions arise regarding banking, reporting and other accounting matters
- Assist in answering and resolving inquiries from clients, governmental agencies and auditors
- Perform new client onboarding, as needed
- Provide guidance and be an example for accounting staff on customer service best practices
- Perform other duties as assigned by the CFO Team
- Review other work performed by the Accounts Payable, Payroll and Grants teams
- Complete forward-looking cash projections based on known client needs
- Communicate with Director of Client Finance regarding cash flow issues and potential courses of action
- Assist in special projects and year-end audit schedule preparation
- Be a resource for Accounting Associate, Grant Team on industry best practices
Qualifications
- Generally, any combination of education that would provide the required knowledge and skills for successful performance would qualify. A typical method of demonstrating these requirements would be:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in accounting. Master’s degree is a plus.
LICENSE: A CPA license or CPA-eligibility is a plus
EXPERIENCE: At least 3 years of experience preparing financial statements (full close), a portion of which should include client management and supporting lower-level team members
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Purposes, methods, and practices of financial and accounting record keeping
- Basic accrual accounting principles and procedures
- Advanced Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) skills and able to design new spreadsheets
- Proper and effective use of English grammar and communication skills (oral and written) to perform job‑related duties
Candidates must also have the ability to:

- Learn the appropriate rules, regulations and technical procedures specifically related to processing payments for non-profit organizations and charter schools
- Understand and carry out directions in an independent manner
- Demonstrate the ability to problem solve
- Perform arithmetic calculations accurately and rapidly
- Prepare a variety of accurate financial reports and summaries
- Identify and correct errors in mathematical computations and financial documents
Experience with the following is a plus:
- Knowledge of Sage Intacct or other similar Non-Profit Accounting systems.
- Knowledge of MN Specific software including Smart Finance or Skyward
