This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Chief Investment Officer / Head of Investments based in United States.
This is a hands-on investment leadership opportunity to build a full robo-advisory offering from the ground up. You will own the investment philosophy, model portfolio construction, fund and ETF selection, allocation methodology, and rebalancing framework. The role combines investment judgment with product development, requiring you to work directly with an established engineering team to turn strategy into a functioning platform. You will also serve as the public and regulatory face of the investment strategy, contributing to filings, client materials, and the conversion of an existing private-fund client base to advisory accounts. Reporting directly to senior leadership, you will have broad ownership and autonomy. This is an ideal role for an experienced investment practitioner who wants to build rather than inherit an established investment organization.
Accountabilities:
- Design and own the Investment Policy Statement and establish the 50/30/20 model portfolio framework across appropriate risk bands, ensuring the investment methodology is coherent, defensible, and aligned with the intended advisory offering.
- Personally select and maintain the fund and ETF lineup using rigorous due-diligence criteria, including cost efficiency, liquidity, tax efficiency, tracking accuracy, and overall suitability for the portfolio strategy.
- Define portfolio allocation, rebalancing, and tax-loss-harvesting methodologies, translating investment decisions into clear rules and specifications that can be implemented within the advisory platform.
- Work directly with the existing 14-person engineering team to turn investment requirements into a functioning product, writing detailed product specifications and collaborating closely throughout development without relying on a separate product translation layer.
- Serve as the named investment leader in regulatory filings, including Form ADV, and represent the investment strategy accurately and credibly across client-facing, marketing, and advisory materials.
- Partner closely with the General Counsel and compliance team to establish the operational and regulatory framework required to run an RIA, helping distinguish advisory activities from the organization's existing broker-dealer and funding-portal operations.
- Develop compliant investment talking points and guidance for licensed representatives who discuss advisory accounts and investment strategies with prospective and existing clients.
- Own the investment function end-to-end, reporting directly to senior leadership and taking responsibility for establishing the strategy, processes, product requirements, and operating framework from the ground up.
- Have personally designed, implemented, and managed model portfolios at a small-to-midsize RIA, robo-advisor, or comparable investment organization, with meaningful hands-on responsibility rather than purely delegated or oversight-level experience.
- Hold a CFA charter or demonstrate an equivalent level of investment expertise through a strong track record of building and managing investment strategies; demonstrated practical results and shipped work are valued more highly than credentials alone.
- Bring strong working knowledge of modern portfolio theory, asset allocation methodologies, passive investment strategies, and fund and ETF selection.
- Be comfortable serving as the publicly named face of an investment strategy, including appearing in regulatory disclosures and communicating investment principles clearly to clients and other stakeholders.
- Be capable of writing detailed product requirements and investment specifications that an engineering team can implement directly, with enough technical fluency to communicate requirements without relying on a separate translator.
- Demonstrate strong judgment around portfolio construction, risk, implementation, and investment trade-offs, with the ability to turn investment principles into practical, scalable product functionality.
- Have a startup and builder mindset, with the willingness to establish an investment function from scratch, make decisions independently, and create processes where none previously exist.
- Be comfortable operating across investment, product, regulatory, compliance, and engineering contexts while maintaining clear ownership of investment decisions.
- This role is not suited to candidates whose experience is exclusively institutional or oversight-based without direct portfolio-building experience, or to candidates whose primary background is compliance or legal rather than investment judgment.
- 100% remote working environment with flexible hours.
- 100% employer-covered medical, dental, and vision insurance, with the ability to select your preferred plan.
- Generous equity package.
- Unlimited paid time off and sick days.
- Optional paid WeWork usage.
- Paid maternity and paternity leave.
- 401(k) retirement program.
- Team off-sites and celebration dinners.
- Opportunity to build a new robo-advisory investment platform from the ground up with significant ownership and autonomy.
- Direct exposure to investment strategy, fintech product development, engineering, regulatory considerations, and client adoption.
- Opportunity to work within a rapidly expanding area of the fintech industry and help shape a new advisory offering.
