Associate Editor, Social, NBC News Digital

NBC News is looking for an Associate Editor, Social to bring our journalism to life across social platforms. You’ll work with reporters, editors, designers and others at NBC News to turn breaking news and original reporting into thoughtful, engaging social journalism — from a strong headline or visual treatment to a full platform-specific rollout. You’ll also be responsible for the day-to-day distribution of NBC News stories across Facebook, X, Threads, Bluesky, LinkedIn, Reddit and Instagram, making sure our journalism reaches audiences wherever they are. 

This is a hands-on role for someone who follows the news closely and understands what makes people stop scrolling and engage, and you’ll have a desire to experiment with how NBC News’ journalism can connect with different audiences on social platforms. You’ll work across a wide range of stories and formats and social storytelling, audience engagement and distribution strategies. 

The role is best suited for a creative thinker who has a deep understanding of the native languages of various social media platforms. You should also have some experience in graphic design and light video editing. 

The position can be based in New York or Los Angeles and is five days a week, Monday-Friday, starting at 1pm ET. You will report to the Senior Editor, Social. 

This position is represented by the News Guild – NY CWA. 

Responsibilities:

• Distribute original reporting and breaking news on NBC News’ social accounts
• Work with the art, photo and data graphics teams to create bespoke social graphics
• Write accurate and compelling headlines and social copy
• Work with the social video teams to distribute original video content
• Select strong visuals for story promotion and live event coverage
• Identify zeitgeisty stories and shareable moments on social media and surface them to the news teams
• Repackage content for distribution on different social platforms
• Track audience behavior to help inform promotion and overall strategy
• Occasionally help curate NBCNews.com homepage and app owned platforms

• At least 1 year of experience working in social media
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and comparable work experience
• Excellent writing skills, solid news judgment and a creative eye
• Experience creating shareable content
• Basic knowledge of graphic design
• Experience using newsroom tools such as TrueAnthem or Social Flow and Chartbeat or Parse.ly
• The position can be located in New York, NY or Los Angeles, CA

Desired skills:

• Basic knowledge of Premiere Pro and video editing

Additional Requirements:

• Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of four days per week. The company reserves the right to change the in office requirement at any time.

Salary range: $75,000 - $80,000
