About TaxValet
We’re not just a tax company. We’re an emotions company. We believe that the work we do is a reflection of our higher purpose in life. And if the work isn’t fulfilling and enjoyable, what’s the point? At our company, our Core Purpose is to “transform negative emotions into something positive for our clients, partners, and each other”. It just so happens that we do that by eliminating the hassle and stress of sales tax. We are looking for candidates who are enthusiastic and want to work towards our Core Purpose, too.
As a fractional sales tax department, TaxValet handles everything for clients, from nexus analysis to permit registrations, filings, audit support, and more. Unlike traditional sales tax software that overpromises and underdelivers, we provide a comprehensive, custom-tailored solution that grows with our clients' businesses. And unlike traditional professional service firms, we offer an all-inclusive solution for a simple, predictable monthly rate with no billable hours.
We're a fast-growing, fully remote, financially stable, and profitable business with an AWESOME team of 80-ish teammates. We're building a world-class fractional sales tax department, and new team members will be part of the reason why.
As a certified B-Corporation, TaxValet is committed to using business as a force for good. This means we consider the impact of our decisions on our team, clients, community, and environment. We're also a "give 1%" organization, dedicating 1% of profit, employee time, and service time to nonprofits.
We are a core-value-driven business. That means we hire, promote, and reward based on alignment with our core values:
- Feel It: We value connecting with the real emotions and experiences of others. We also value respectfully sharing our own real emotions and experiences with others.
- Shape It: We proactively contribute our ideas and talents by speaking up, challenging the status quo, and taking calculated risks to shape our future.
- Own It: We take full responsibility for our actions, decisions, and outcomes. We use both successes and failures as opportunities for growth, openly sharing lessons learned.
- Crush It: We relentlessly pursue exponential impact in our business and life.
- Question It: Be curious. Ask questions. Seek clarity in the pursuit of continuous improvement and excellence. Create a culture of fearless inquiry.
If you're enthusiastic about transforming negative emotions into something positive and want to work towards our Core Purpose, we'd love to hear from you!
Title: Director of Tax Strategy
Location: 100% Remote with core working hours of 11am-4pm EST
About The Role
The Director of Tax Strategy holds a high level of responsibility for the smooth functioning, strategic direction, and risk management of our Onboarding and Audit & VDA teams.
This is a leadership role for someone who loves guiding teams through complex work, not by having every answer, but by asking the right questions. You’ll help our managers and specialists think strategically, minimize risk, and show up as trusted advisors to our clients (and each other). You’ll bring structure when things are messy, perspective when things are stressful, and calm when… things get weird. (Because sometimes things get weird.)
You’ll spend your time developing strong managers, strengthening operational systems, supporting high-stakes tax strategy decisions, and ensuring our teams have what they need to deliver a consistent, high-quality experience, even as we continue to scale.
As a member of TaxValet’s management team, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape how we deliver our services at a high level, reduce client stress, and build a world-class team in a company that cares deeply about people, purpose, and doing excellent work.
Why This Role Exists
TaxValet is growing quickly and as we scale, the complexity of onboarding clients, supporting audits, and handling high-stakes sales tax strategy continues to increase. This role exists so our teams have the leadership, structure, and coaching they need to deliver an exceptional experience for clients, without chaos becoming the default.
This position is especially important because the work we support in onboarding, audit, and voluntary disclosure work isn’t just about getting tasks done. It’s about making smart decisions, managing risk, communicating clearly, and helping clients feel confident, even when the stakes are high.
Your Qualifications
We’re looking for someone who is ready to learn and grow professionally and wants a career (not just a job). We can train you on a lot of things, but here are our non-negotiables.
Professional
- Strong sales tax foundation, especially around nexus, taxability, and multi-state compliance strategy, and the ability to understand how decisions ripple into compliance outcomes over time.
- Demonstrated ability to research and interpret state statutes and translate complexity into clear, actionable guidance for teams and clients.
- Proven experience leading teams through complex, high-stakes work where accuracy, timeliness, and risk management matter.
- Strong operational instincts: you can improve systems, create scalable workflows, and raise quality without burning people out.
- Comfortable partnering cross-functionally to adopt improvements that increase efficiency and accuracy.
- Able to use data and spreadsheets to plan capacity, forecast needs, and guide prioritization.
Interpersonal
- You’re drawn to leadership and coaching, not because you “have to,” but because you genuinely care about helping people grow and thrive.
- You hold people accountable with care and clarity, because clear is kind.
- You bring a growth mindset and know how to build that culture within your teams: curiosity, feedback, experimentation, and learning are normal here.
- You’re calm under pressure and can lead through high-stress situations without spreading chaos. (We love a steady nervous system.)
- You’re a strong communicator and can coach others in client and internal communication daily.
- You’re resourceful, strategic, and comfortable navigating ambiguity; you don’t need someone to hand you step-by-step instructions to create clarity.
- You align with (and actively live out) our core values: Feel It, Shape It, Own It, Crush It, Question It.
Your Primary Responsibilities
- Vision & Direction. Define and drive the strategic goals of the Onboarding and Audit & VDA teams in alignment with TaxValet’s long-term direction. Establish clear priorities, operating rhythms, and improvement initiatives that keep quality high and risk low as the business scales.
- Team Development, Management and Leadership. Develop and coach leaders across Onboarding and Audit & VDA, ensuring they have the support, tools, and training needed to lead confidently. Create a culture of accountability and growth where expectations are clear, feedback is consistent, and people are continuously improving (because clear is kind).
- Tax Strategy, Risk & Escalation Leadership. Provide strategic tax leadership by helping teams identify risk areas, ask smart questions, and make strong decisions in complex or high-stakes situations. Own escalations when a client or partner situation isn’t going well, ensuring a successful outcome while strengthening the team’s ability to handle similar issues in the future.
- Operational Excellence & Problem-Solving. Support teams in identifying operational issues, pain points, and bottlenecks, and designing practical solutions. Promote curiosity and experimentation that leads to continual improvement over time, and ensure key processes are documented and executed consistently so quality stays strong as we grow.
- Cross-Functional Partnership. Partner across operational teams, Tech & Innovation, and Sales & Marketing to improve handoffs, strengthen communication, and support consistent tax strategy positioning throughout the client lifecycle. Serve as a liaison to Marketing by reviewing outlines and final drafts of external content to ensure technical accuracy, strategic clarity, and alignment with TaxValet’s voice and messaging, grounded in confidence (not fear). Facilitate our legal support process and relationships with approved legal partners to ensure we get the right guidance at the right time.
This Role is a Fit For You If…
- You love leading leaders: coaching managers, building confidence, and helping teams thrive (not just checking boxes).
- You’re energized by messy problems and unclear situations… and you’re the kind of person who brings calm, structure, and forward momentum.
- You care deeply about the client experience, and you’re always thinking, “How do we make this feel easier, clearer, and less stressful for them?”
- You enjoy helping teams operate as trusted advisors: asking the right questions, spotting risk early, and communicating clearly in high-stakes moments.
- You can zoom out to think strategically and zoom in when something needs your attention (without becoming the bottleneck).
- You believe “clear is kind,” and you’re willing to have the honest conversations that help people grow.
- You’re curious, solutions-oriented, and you genuinely enjoy improving systems over time, not because things are “broken,” but because you believe there’s always a better way.
