About the Role
Workwize is hiring a Data Engineer to build and scale our end-to-end data foundations: from source systems (back-end, APIs, spreadsheets, finance/accounting tools) to a reliable data warehouse, a structured metrics layer, and trusted dashboards. You’ll own the core pipelines and data architecture that enable teams to make better decisions, faster — with a strong focus on financial and operational reconciliation, data quality, and scalability.
This role partly reports to the Chief of Staff (business prioritisation, outcomes, stakeholder alignment) and partly to an Engineering Manager (technical coaching, quality bar, growth and development).
Key responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines from multiple sources (APIs, spreadsheets, SaaS tools, internal systems) into the data warehouse
- Own and evolve Workwize’s data warehouse architecture: schemas, modelling approach, naming conventions, documentation, and access patterns.
- Create a structured metrics layer (definitions, transformations, lineage) so KPIs are consistent across dashboards and teams.
- Reconcile finance and operational datasets to ensure one source of truth (e.g., matching invoices, payments, revenue, costs, shipments, retrievals)
- Implement robust data quality practices: tests, anomaly detection, monitoring, alerting, and incident response for broken pipelines
- Partner with Finance, Operations, Product, and Engineering to translate business questions into reliable datasets and dashboards
- Improve performance, reliability, and maintainability of pipelines through automation, orchestration, and best practices (version control, code reviews, CI/CD).
- Contribute to analytics enablement: making data discoverable, understandable, and self-serve for stakeholders (documentation, data cataloging, training where helpful)
Education and experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data/Analytics, Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent practical experience
- 3+ years in a data engineering, analytics engineering, or similar role (we’re open to strong 2+ year profiles with proven ownership)
- Hands-on experience building end-to-end data pipelines and data models used for business reporting
- Experience working with financial data (accounting tools, revenue/cost reconciliation, invoicing, payments) is a strong plus
- Experience in a scale-up/SaaS environment and collaborating with non-technical stakeholders is a plus
Technical skills
- Strong SQL skills (complex transformations, performance tuning, dimensional modelling)
- Proficiency in at least one programming language used for data work (e.g., Python)
- Experience with data warehouses (e.g., BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, Postgres)
- Experience building ELT/ETL with modern tooling (e.g., dbt, Airflow/Dagster/Prefect, Fivetran/Stitch/custom pipelines)
- Data modelling best practices
- Ability to work comfortably in backend contexts: reading/writing code, reviewing PRs, adding/adjusting tracking calls.
- Working knowledge of APIs, authentication, and webhooks (helpful for both tracking and source ingestion).
- Familiarity with BI tools / dashboarding (e.g., Tableau) to ensure datasets are dashboard-ready
Soft skills
- Strong ownership mindset: you build, run, and improve — and you care about reliability
- Structured communicator: can translate ambiguous business questions into clear data requirements and deliverables
- High attention to detail and a healthy skepticism for “numbers that don’t look right” (especially for finance metrics)
- Pragmatic problem solver: balances speed with long-term maintainability
- Collaborative and stakeholder-oriented: works well across Finance, Ops, Product, and Engineering
- Comfortable with prioritisation and trade-offs in a fast-moving environment
Workwize offers:
- A competitive salary and bonus scheme while working in a fast-growing, and dynamic environment.
- Flexibility to work in a hybrid/remote environment, balancing office and home settings.
- The best working setup, with all necessary tools and equipment provided.
- A vibrant, entrepreneurial work environment that encourages innovation and growth.
