The Manager, Peer Review Excellence, reporting to the Director, Editorial and Researcher Experience, is a strategic leader and collaborative partner who plays a significant role in the performance, governance, and continuous improvement of the peer review and editorial workflows that underpin AIP Publishing's journal portfolio. Serving as a senior subject matter expert in peer review workflow design and execution, this role provides leadership and guidance to support consistent and sustainable practices across editorial teams, vendors, and systems, while partnering across the organization to advance efficient, high-quality peer review processes.
How you’ll make an impact:
Peer Review Workflow Leadership
- Provide leadership for the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of peer review workflows across the journal portfolio
- Guide the design, implementation, standardization, and continuous improvement of peer review workflows across the journal portfolio.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for peer review workflow design, ensuring workflows support editorial quality, research integrity, and publishing best practices.
- Identify operational bottlenecks, maintain workflow documentation and standards, and drive process improvements.
Vendor Management
- Serve as a key leader for vendor-supported editorial operations and peer review services, including vendor onboarding, performance management, SLA compliance, business reviews, and operational escalations.
- Develop performance dashboards and identify opportunities to improve service quality, efficiency, and value.
Manuscript Tracking System Migration & Implementation
- Serve as a key leader in operational activities supporting manuscript tracking system migrations, including workflow design, business process documentation, system configuration, testing, operational readiness, training, and change management.
- Manage implementation risks, stakeholder coordination, and post-launch optimization.
Workflow Transformation & Continuous Improvement
- Drive workflow standardization, automation, process redesign, and implementation of new editorial technologies to improve operational effectiveness and modernize editorial infrastructure.
- Assess operational impacts of policy and process changes.
Operational Analytics & Performance Monitoring
- Develop dashboards and reporting to monitor workflow performance, vendor SLAs, operational risks, and key metrics.
- Provide data-driven insights and recommendations to support continuous improvement and decision making.
People Leadership
- Lead, develop, and support staff by fostering collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and effective resource planning.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Partner with internal teams and external partners to lead cross-functional initiatives, align workflow standards, support change management, and represent editorial workflow requirements across strategic projects.

- Managing vendors and building strong cross-functional partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Balancing operational efficiency with editorial quality and researcher experience while influencing adoption of standardized processes.
What we’re looking for:
- Bachelor's degree in relevant field.
- 7+ years of experience in scholarly publishing, editorial operations, and peer review management, including working across multiple journals or publishing portfolios.
- Experience leading workflow automation, operational improvement initiatives, and manuscript tracking system implementations or migrations.
- Experience managing editorial office vendors and service providers.
- Strong analytical, process-oriented, and project management capabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to use operational data to drive continuous improvement and influence cross-functional stakeholders.

Salary Range:
$125,000 – $140,000
At AIPP, we offer competitive compensation based on the role, experience, and other relevant factors. Under the New York Convenience Rule, all employees, regardless of their residence in other states, will be taxed at the New York State tax rate. Employees may also have additional state-specific tax obligations depending on where they live.
