About the Role
A client of Attain Talent is seeking a Product Designer to support a mission-critical Federal Government program within the EPA’s Office of Air. This role supports the EPA Unified Platform—a modern, open, data-centric application ecosystem used to collect, validate, calculate, analyze, and report complex environmental and regulatory air-quality data.
We are seeking a Product Designer who is experienced in designing complex, data-intensive applications and thrives in environments where accuracy, clarity, and system behavior matter as much as visual design. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with scientific data, calculations, validations, and rule-driven workflows and can translate that complexity into intuitive, usable experiences.
This is not a website or marketing UX role. The Product Designer will work on complex, data-intensive applications that incorporate scientific values, calculations, validations, and regulatory business rules. You will design user experiences that help technical, scientific, and regulatory users confidently interact with large datasets, analytical workflows, and system-driven logic while maintaining accuracy, traceability, and usability.
You will collaborate closely with product owners, architects, engineers, and federal stakeholders to translate complex system behavior and data models into intuitive, accessible, and reliable user experiences. Success in this role requires comfort designing for enterprise applications, analytical tools, and workflow-driven systems where correctness and clarity are as important as visual design.
This position offers an opportunity to apply human-centered design principles to systems that directly support environmental protection, public transparency, and evidence-based regulatory decision-making.
Your Impact
You will join a collaborative, agile team with strong technical foundations already in place. Your focus will include:
- Human-Centered Design Leadership: Translate user needs, regulatory workflows, and technical constraints into clear, usable, and accessible designs.
- Accessibility & Compliance Excellence: Ensure all designs align with Section 508 and WCAG standards, supporting equitable access to federal systems.
- Product Collaboration: Partner with product managers, architects, and developers to define and implement design solutions that align with platform direction and user needs.
- Complexity Reduction: Conceptualize and deliver designs that simplify complex environmental and regulatory data workflows.
- Design Artifacts & Communication: Create and present wireframes, mockups, prototypes, and visual assets to internal teams and government stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Design user experiences for complex, data-driven applications, supporting scientific, regulatory, and analytical workflows
- Translate complex environmental datasets, scientific values, calculations, and business rules into intuitive, usable interfaces that support accuracy, transparency, and decision-making
- Collaborate closely with architects, engineers, and product owners to design UX solutions aligned with system architecture, data models, and application logic
- Develop wireframes, user flows, and prototypes that reflect real system behaviors, including validations, calculations, edge cases, and error handling
- Design interfaces for data-heavy views such as dashboards, forms, tables, filters, comparisons, and analytical tools
- Ensure UX designs support data integrity, traceability, and auditability, especially for regulatory and compliance-driven systems
- Incorporate accessibility (Section 508 / WCAG) requirements into complex application components, not just static pages
- Participate in requirements analysis and discovery to understand scientific workflows, user roles, and operational constraints
- Identify and resolve usability challenges that arise from complex system interactions, performance considerations, and evolving data requirements
- Present design concepts and rationale to internal teams and government stakeholders, clearly explaining how UX decisions support complex system use cases
The right candidate will bring:
- Proven experience designing UX for enterprise or analytical applications, not just marketing or content-driven websites
- Strong ability to translate complex data models, calculations, and business rules into clear user flows and interface patterns
- Comfort collaborating closely with architects, engineers, and product owners to align UX with system logic and technical constraints
- Experience designing data-heavy interfaces such as dashboards, tables, forms, filters, comparisons, and workflow-driven tools
- Strong understanding of user roles, permissions, and task-based workflows in multi-user systems
- Ability to design for edge cases, validations, errors, and system feedback, not just happy-path scenarios
- Experience incorporating accessibility (Section 508 / WCAG) requirements into complex application components
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain design rationale to technical teams and government stakeholders
- Comfort working in agile, iterative environments where requirements evolve as system understanding deepens
Preferred Experience
- Experience supporting federal, regulatory, scientific, or data-centric systems
- Familiarity with environmental, scientific, or compliance-driven domains
- Experience working alongside modern web application stacks (e.g., React, TypeScript)
- Familiarity with designing UX that supports data traceability, auditability, and regulatory review
Qualifications
- 8+ years of professional experience as a UI/UX Designer, Product Designer, or similar role focused on complex, data-driven applications
- Demonstrated experience designing UX for enterprise systems, analytical tools, or workflow-based applications (not solely content or marketing websites)
- 2+ years of experience with modern design and prototyping tool Figma
- Experience creating wireframes, user flows, interaction models, and high-fidelity prototypes that reflect real system behavior
- Experience designing data-heavy interfaces, including tables, dashboards, forms, filters, and validation-driven workflows
- Familiarity with accessibility standards (Section 508 and WCAG) and applying them to complex application components
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to understand and design for business rules, calculations, validations, and edge cases
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain design decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders
