About Funga
Funga is a public benefit corporation harnessing forest fungal networks to address the climate crisis. We combine modern DNA sequencing and machine learning technology with breakthrough research on the forest microbiome to put the right native, biodiverse communities of mycorrhizal fungi in the right place. This leads to more quality wood created more quickly, more carbon sequestered, and more resilient forests. We serve land partners seeking to implement regenerative forestry practices that improve productivity and sustainability, and corporate carbon buyers building high-quality carbon removal portfolios with strong social and biodiversity outcomes. We’re a team of passionate scientists and builders on a mission to draw down at least three gigatons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by 2050.
If you are excited by starting new things, learning as you go, and being hands-on in applying your work to the private sector, you will dig working with us. We encourage you to apply even if only some of the below criteria are met—just make sure to tell us why you’re excited about Funga!
About the Role
At Funga, we leverage cutting-edge data pipelines to manage large-scale genomic, ecological, and geospatial datasets. We are looking for a Data Engineer to join our team with a focus on Data & Delivery.
At Funga, our data is only as valuable as it is accessible. Working alongside our Data Infrastructure Engineer, you will own the last mile of our data stack, engineering the pipelines, models, and interfaces that make our data actionable. You will have the autonomy to troubleshoot existing bottlenecks and build the new standards for how we ingest, validate, and deliver data across the entire organization, unlocking both business value and real climate and biodiversity impact.
This is a great role for an engineer or solutions architect who is driven to bridge the gap between complex backend infrastructure, messy real-world data, and intuitive internal tools to catalyze the work of your teammates and drive tangible climate progress.
In This Role, You Will:
- Engineer Data Delivery & Modeling
- Use SQL and Python to build the transformation layers (dbt) that turn raw datasets into clean, versioned, and performant models ready for analysis. Your work here will supercharge our modeling efforts.
- Lead the implementation of internal data apps (Streamlit or similar). You'll build the windows into Funga's data, ensuring Growth and Land teams have high-visibility into carbon and biodiversity metrics, accelerating our sales, operations, and growth.
- Geospatial Workflows: Architect workflows to manage the flow of complex vector and raster data, from QA/QC of messy field-collected boundary files to integrating high-resolution drone imagery to supporting mapping solutions for field teams.
- Scale Quality & Operations
- Automated QA/QC: Engineer the automated validation pipelines that catch inconsistencies in genomic, geospatial, and tabular data before they reach downstream systems, with an eye toward continuous, measurable improvement.
- Build and maintain containerized connectors (scripts, APIs, and services) that pull data from third-party applications like Survey123, ArcGIS, and Asana into our core infrastructure.
- Act as a solutions architect for internal teams, ensuring that data is synced correctly across our ecosystem and that the data they see is accurate, timely and useful.
- Cloud Engineering & Fundamental Data Infrastructure
- Build, deploy, and monitor your pipelines and apps using Docker and cloud-native services (AWS/GCP)
- Serve as a peer-partner to the Data Infrastructure Engineer, collaborating on core database architecture and schema evolution to ensure seamless downstream integration.
Our Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- 3+ years of experience as a Data Engineer, Solutions Architect, or similar experience, with strong experience with backend systems.
- Advanced SQL proficiency. You know how to structure and utilize complex datasets for both performance and clarity.
- Demonstrated ability to independently navigate cloud environments (AWS/GCP) and to deploy services and manage resources (S3, Lambda, ECS) while maintaining alignment with core infrastructure standards.
- You write clean Python for data manipulation, automation, and internal tooling.
- You treat internal teams as your customers. You are driven to build data-rich workflows and applications that solve real problems. You aren't a designer, but you take pride in building functional, reliable interfaces and data products that meet teams where they are and accelerate their work with clear insights.
- Familiarity with geospatial data storage, and management tools and concepts (e.g. PostGIS, GDAL) is a major plus.
- Familiarity with genomic sequence or ecological data management and modeling is a plus.
- Pragmatic: You prefer simple, mature, and composable tools over heavy, managed platforms. You have a bias for creating value now versus perfection later.
- NOTE - please apply if you feel you are qualified, but don't necessarily meet all of the above criteria!
Why Join Funga?
