Trainline’s Technology & Data teams represent the company’s most significant area of investment as we continue to build on our position as Europe’s most downloaded travel app. Innovation is at the core of how we work, and we constantly challenge ourselves to transform how we operate — optimising for speed, quality and cost while leveraging emerging technologies.
As part of this mission, the Technical Operations team is responsible for ensuring our technology ecosystem delivers maximum value to the business. We work across cloud, SaaS, on-premise and third-party platforms to drive operational discipline, transparency and efficiency at scale.
Lead the development and execution of Trainline’s enterprise-wide FinOps strategy, aligned to business objectives and technology transformation goals
Establish policies, frameworks and best practices to manage and optimise technology spend across all systems
Embed FinOps principles across the organisation, driving a culture of cost transparency, accountability and optimisation
Partner closely with Finance, Technology, Procurement and Business teams to align spend with value and outcomes
Oversee governance frameworks for cost allocation, chargeback and financial accountability across departments
Define decision-making frameworks for technology investment, rationalisation and optimisation
Provide executive-level insight into total cost of ownership (TCO), return on investment (ROI), spend patterns and cost drivers
Support budgeting, forecasting and long-term planning for technology investments
Influence senior stakeholders to balance cost efficiency with innovation and growth
Build, lead and develop a high-performing FinOps team through coaching, mentoring and capability building
Champion FinOps training and certification programmes across Technology and Finance
Represent Trainline in external FinOps communities and industry forums
Proven experience in technology finance, FinOps or strategic financial management within a technology-driven organisation
Strong experience managing AWS accounts and driving cloud cost optimisation best practices
Deep understanding of cloud economics, SaaS models, IT procurement and governance frameworks
A track record of defining and executing strategy at an enterprise level
Excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence senior and executive audiences
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in financial modelling and reporting
Familiarity with FinOps Foundation principles and certifications (desirable)
Experience in systems operations, business systems analysis or related senior roles
Understanding of SaaS contracts, vendor management and cloud financial management
Ability to create clear, structured playbooks or frameworks to guide organisational decision-making
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
A strategic, collaborative and proactive mindset, with a passion for transparency, efficiency and innovation
