The Director of Health & Safety for North America will work closely with the regional board, Global Health & Safety Lead, regional HR teams and country lead H&S coordinators, provide Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) leadership within the region around our people & offices and commercial delivery of programs & projects (guardrails, compliance and the mitigation/control of risk). This role is the key position within the region supporting the business to drive a culture of HSE technical excellence and performance to protect people, assets and brand.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Drive a culture of safety and visible leadership commitment into everything we do by continuously assessing organizational maturity, establishing baselines and creating action plans in partnership with the business.
- Act as the key in-region H&S lead, developing implementation strategies to support global and central initiatives and business operations requirements. This will include developing management information and board reports for H&S.
- Implement and integrate the H&S Management System framework, standards and tools into business strategy to ensure legal compliance and operational assurance (including ISO standards).
- Continually assess HSE risk through execution of the global central assurance strategy including operational risk strategy, audit & execution of regional programs of work and timely site attendance with offices and client sites and execution of commissions/project delivery.
- Provide ad-hoc timely counsel and information to management on account, market, area and/or region basis on HSE matters including trends, performance or concerns.
- Manage the HSE notification, escalation and reporting process for the region to ensure lessons learned & improvement plans are identified; monitor root causes and help to drive a mindset of learning & improvement from incidents.
- Work to ensure the wider team and account structures have access to technical guidance that helps teams interpret national and state laws, statutory regs and best practices through hierarchy of controls, risk assessment, procedures and smart actions (our R4 model).
- Serve as lead investigator for preliminary fatal/non-fatal incidents or PSIF (potential serious incident) events; Produce preliminary (final) reports through standardized templates.
- Conduct lead investigations and sign-off high level reports of serious incidents.
- In partnership with HR, conduct ergonomics assessments, workforce wellness clinics, liaison with internal workplace support including implementing Return-to-Work (RTW) plans.
- In partnership with HR, support wellbeing initiatives, including mental health guidance.
- Support H&S consultants/professional services, when needed.
- SOX control responsibilities may be part of this role, which are to be adhered to where applicable.
- University degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Engineering or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certification from an Occupational Safety & Health accreditation body.
- Auditor training/qualifications ideally to ISO 9000, ISO 14000 and/or ISO 45001.
Skills & attitudes:
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, communication skills (oral & written) and highly customer-centric.
- Fluent in English; other languages an advantage.

- Comfortable working with a variety of industry sectors and robust HSE Management Systems.
- PowerPoint, MS Word & Excel – intermediate to advanced level.
Prior experience:
- Minimum 7+ years construction experience, architecture/engineering environment, or HSE experience in a similar field.
- Experience working for contractors as an HSE lead, consultant or professional services.
- Demonstrated experience developing principles & frameworks.
- Experience with HSE elements delivering projects in principal/PMC.
