Job Overview
The Plumbing Estimator will play a vital role in preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for plumbing projects. This position involves interpreting plans and specifications, preparing material and labour take-offs, sourcing supplier quotations, and supporting project teams to ensure cost-effective and timely delivery. The ideal candidate has solid experience in plumbing or construction estimating, strong analytical and communication skills, and excellent attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities
Scope & Document Review
- Analyse drawings, specifications, and scope of works to fully understand project requirements.
- Identify risks, assumptions, and exclusions; raise RFIs to clarify project details before pricing.
Quantity Take-Offs
- Measure fixtures, pipework, valves, equipment, labour units, and preliminaries with precision.
- Ensure all quantities and calculations are complete and consistent with project documentation.
Pricing & Quotations
- Build cost models including materials, labour, plant, and overheads.
- Prepare and submit 1–4 detailed quotations per week, clearly outlining inclusions, exclusions, and terms.
Supplier/Subcontractor Procurement
- Obtain, review, and compare supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Negotiate pricing and maintain an up-to-date preferred vendor list for key trades and materials.
Value Engineering
- Recommend cost-effective materials, systems, or installation methods.
- Support project teams in identifying opportunities to improve efficiency or reduce costs without compromising quality or compliance.
CRM & Pipeline Management
- Log all estimating opportunities and maintain accurate tracking of quote status and follow-ups.
- Report on hit rates, conversion ratios, and quotation performance metrics.
Project Handover
- Prepare and issue Bills of Quantities (BOQs), project budgets, and purchase schedules.
- Conduct handover briefings with project and site teams to ensure a seamless transition from estimation to delivery.
Cost Database & Compliance
- Update rate libraries and maintain historical cost data.
- Review tender outcomes, analyse wins/losses, and align future estimates with codes, standards, and WHS requirements.
Key Requirements
- Proven experience as an Estimator in plumbing, construction, or related trade environments.
- Strong knowledge of plumbing systems, materials, and installation methods.
- Proficiency in estimating and tender management software (and Excel).
- Excellent analytical and numerical skills with a high level of accuracy.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Ability to manage multiple quotes and deadlines efficiently.
- Understanding of Australian building codes, standards, and WHS compliance.
